Welcome To My Garden

Dang, y’all. You sure do know how to make me feel good when I reluctantly hit “send” instead of deleting my thoughts. But really, what is the point of having a blog if I don’t post my actual thoughts? Sometimes it just has to be done. And I love the positive feedback, thank you!

So, what did you do this weekend? Here in VA/DC, the weather was off-and-on rainy all weekend, but stayed nice enough that we were able to spend a lot of time outside. It was perfect weather for gardening! Last time I posted about my landscaping, it looked pretty gross. On Saturday, we went to Home Depot and picked up a bunch of plants to get started on our vegetable/herb garden and to brighten up our front stoop.

Here was my vegetable garden in March, just dirt and weeds.

Here’s my garden now:

We’ve got, from left to right, grape tomatoes, two regular tomato plants, and red and green bell peppers:

Next to that, we planted seeds. I am only mildly confident that the seeds will germinate, as I planted them very hastily. I didn’t spread the seeds out properly, so I’m hoping after things germinate (if they germinate), I can thin it out. From left to right, if memory serves me, I planted broccoli, arugula, parsley, and chives.

See that little green plant at the top? That’s crookneck squash. In a month or so, it will be enormous, approximately 3′ across.

In March, I cut my rose plant all the way down because it was out of control, about eight feet high. It was an eyesore. I left nothing but a few 24″ stalks and figured if I “accidentally” killed it, that would be okay.

It looks like this now:

And pretty soon the pink roses will be exploding!

In the luxury spot next to the trash can, I planted basil and cilantro. We nibbled at each of these when we planted them, and it turns out J-Man loves cilantro! He keeps going back and taking “just one more” leaf. I think he may eat the entire plant before it has a chance to start growing!

Basil:

Cilantro:

Last but not least, we have this random bare sunny spot that we’d been thinking we could use as extra garden space.

J-Man saw a watermelon plant at Home Depot and desperately wanted it. It says it needs ten feet of space, so we planted it in the extra spot. Totally haven’t pulled the weeds yet, so we’ll need to do that before it starts spreading. Wouldn’t that be awesome if we actually grew watermelons???

As you can see, we displaced a bunch of red clay to plant the watermelon. Methinks things don’t grow too well in red clay. We’ll find out!

Okay, that’s it for the vegetable garden. All in all, we planted:

  • Grape tomatoes
  • Regular tomatoes (two kinds)
  • Green bell pepper
  • Red bell pepper
  • Broccoli
  • Arugula
  • Parsley
  • Chives
  • Crookneck Squash
  • Basil
  • Cilantro
  • Watermelon

WHOA!!!

Moving on to the non-edibles. My light post in the front yard, in March, with the tulips and lilies just coming up. Oh, and two cute little white flowers. I have no idea what they are. Crocus?

The lightpost now. The tulips have come and gone (only one flowered, booo!), and now we have lilies which are going to flower soon.

Also, last year I planted a clematis because I wanted it to climb up my light post and look pretty. It didn’t take, and I thought it died, but this spring it came back! It’s starting to climb up, and I’m very excited.

And of course, in March, there were all the nasty, dead plants on my front stoop:

(I’m sorry for subjecting you to those images.)

Anything I plant in those large planters quickly dies. We figured the planters were not draining well (we weren’t sure what was in there since they came with the house), so we emptied them out, put gravel and rocks in the bottom, and filled them with treated soil. Then we planted a spiky plant (Husband seems to remember it was called Dracaena?) surrounded by purple and pink petunias.

I love petunias, because they spread, and they keep flowering all summer. I can’t wait until this grows a bit and fills out. I think it’s going to look spectacular!

Last but not least, I want to share with you my irises. My friend Anna gave me some iris bulbs in 2009, a year after I moved into this house and when I was still terrified of planting things. I planted them in November 2009, and totally didn’t expect them to actually grow. Last spring, the green leaves grew, but no flowers. But surprise, this spring they flowered, and they are beautiful!

I love the bluish purple color!

That’s it for now. I’m praying my vegetable garden does well. Last year, we planted green beans, tomatoes, and squash (and attempted carrots which was a FAIL). I’ve never tried to grow so many different things, so I’m really excited!

  1. Ah I would love to do something like this but alas we only have an apartment blah. We grow herbs in our window sill which is going alright 😛

    • Christine says:

This is my first time trying to grow herbs. That will be a money saver for me. I hate buying fresh herbs when I only need a tablespoon. The rest always goes to waste!

  2. Wow – that’s a lot of work! I hope everything grows for you!! And I laughed out loud at “the luxury spot next to the trash can”. Haha. If I was cilantro, that is EXACTLY where I would want to be planted.

  3. LOVE the irises. My grandma used to have them growing at her house- I always liked the color and how it “pops” against a house… 🙂

  4. oh my goodness those irises are beautiful! 🙂

I am so jealous of your garden and all of the wonderful produce you are going to grow. Although we’ll likely be moving to a city (and be living in an apt) I wish that we would move to an area where we can have at least a little patch of land to plant a garden. Sigh some day.

I can’t wait to see all of the lovely fruit and veg you grow! 🙂

  5. Hannah says:

Fingers and toes crossed for bountiful awesomeness!!

  6. Wow.

I want your garden! That’s so cool—I’m a big fan of the idea of self-sustaining plots… but I suppose I’d have to have space to do that. I’m inspired! That looks like LOTS of work, so well done, you!

  7. Cherry Lane says:

Can’t exactly tell from the photo, but yes, I do think those white flowers were crocus. Nice planters in front! And your hubby was right about the Dracaena (its common name is Spikes – that may be easier to remember, no?). Love your irises! Let me know if you want some oregano – it’s perennial, and I have some to share. Maybe some other herbs, too.

  8. Allie says:

Isn’t blogging the best?! I love hitting that send button on one of those deadly honest posts! It is thrilling 🙂

Your. Garden. Looks. Amazing. WOW! I am super jealous! Mine is looking kind of nappy and gross hahaha. I cannot wait to see how everything grows!

  9. Those flowers are beautiful! I esp. like the purple/blue color of that last one. I wish I had a green thumb and could actually harvest some veggies from what I plant. I always seem to mess that one up! My bf on the other had always has a great garden.

  10. Priyanka says:

I want to have my own beautiful veg. garden someday. Your garden has undergone quite the transformation.

  11. your garden is looking awesome! one of the things i’m really looking forward to about owning a house of my own one day :).

  12. I’m too intimidated (and lazy) to garden, but yours is so similar to my pretend one. I’d definitely have bell peppers, cilantro, and basil. I’m inspired by your hard work.

  13. So cool! My fiance and I planted things in his parents’ garden last year. We mistakenly started off with squash, which almost took out the entire garden. That stuff is prolific!
We also planted carrots. I think we eneded up with 3 measly stubs we proudly called carrots.

We’re starting again this year, but haven’t gotten our lazy butts to do it yet. We do have herbs planted inside right now! I’m also a huge cilantro fan!

    • Christine says:

Yeah, last year we were totally unprepared for how big the squash plant got. We planted two of them and definitely only needed one! I love fresh squash. One of my favorite plants in the garden!

  14. Panda says:

Nice! I wish mine looked like that 😦 I have a small circle and that’s it. I do have a nice container garden though. I will do better next year!

    • Christine says:

I’ve been gardening a few years now, and each year I do more and more. It gets much more fun with practice.

  15. Your garden is looking good!! Can’t wait to see the roses and all the veggies! You’re going to have some amazing salads, I know it!

  16. LauraJayne says:

I’m in love with your garden pictures (and garden, of course) – I am SO not good at things like that (I wish I was), so I am more than impressed by you!

  17. I love your garden! I buy seeds every year and never plant them. I really want to plant pumpkins!

  18. What a beautiful garden! 😀 And whee, you’ve done so much in there! All the herbs and spices you grow there … and watermelons! 😀 I hope you’ll havest giant watermelons! 😀

  19. You and The Lover would get along. He’s a gardening fool! I love fresh veggies from the garden. It just tastes so much better! We tried our hand at potatoes this year and they are delish!

  20. I am super jealous of your garden! I have started a mini one with tomatos, cilantro and basil. But the only thing that has started to grow is the tomato plant. hmm, not sure if I have a green thumb or not?!

  21. go girl go! that is one hardcore garden you have in the works there! =) so jealous ❤

  22. You’re going to have soooo many goodies soon! I’m jealous 🙂

  23. Missy says:

AWESOME! Do you get the kids involved?

    • Christine says:

My preschooler helped, absolutely! He digs holes, helps fill in the soil, etc. And of course, eats the cilantro.

  24. Grace says:

Someone has been busy! That is so awesome! Can’t wait to see some recipes bloom from that garden:)

  25. Rach says:

Looks great!! I can’t wait to get our garden in!

  26. Oh it looks like you are going to have so many nice vegetables and herbs! We just got ours planted today because we have had so much rain that the ground has been too wet. I love picking fresh vegetable right out of the garden! Your Iris are just beautiful. Love the clor.
